Festival Producer and Choreographer

Canadian-born dancer and choreographer, Anjali Patil, has been trained in India under renowned masters of Kathak Classical Indian dance. She is the founder and artistic director of Aroha Fine Arts, one of only a handful of organizations working in the professional Kathak dance milieu. 

Anjali has performed her works at noteworthy events – from the Canada Dance Festival to Delhi International Arts Festival, the Junos to International Film Festival of India. A sought-after teacher and coach, Anjali teaches in Ottawa, Toronto, India and the Middle East. She was invited as a guest lecturer at the Dance Department of Hyderabad University in India and as a panelist at a dance seminar presented by National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai, India. 

As a means of celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary, she launched ArohaFest, the only fully bilingual festival celebrating the arts and culture of India in Canada, in 2017.

La danseuse et chorégraphe Anjali Patil, née au Canada, est formée en Inde auprès de maîtres renommés de la danse indienne classique en Kathak. Elle est Fondatrice et Directrice artistique d’Aroha Fine Arts, l’une des rares organisations œuvrant dans le milieu de la danse professionnelle en Kathak. 

Anjali a interprété ses œuvres lors de grands événements tels que le Festival Danse Canada, le Festival international des arts de Delhi, les Junos, ainsi que le Festival international du film de l’Inde. Anjali, enseignante et coach recherchée, enseigne à Ottawa, à Toronto, en Inde ainsi qu’au moyen orient. Elle a été invitée en tant que conférencière au département de danse de l’Université d’Hyderabad en Inde et en tant que panéliste au séminaire lié à la danse présenté par le Centre national des Arts de la scène à Mumbai. 

Pour souligner le 150e anniversaire du Canada, elle lance ArohaFest, le seul festival entièrement bilingue qui célèbre les arts et la culture de l’Inde au Canada.

Geoffrey Dollar is a graduate of the School of Dance Contemporary Dance Diploma Programme and a dedicated contributor to Ottawa’s dance community since 2016. He has collaborated with a wide range of organizations and artists, including Ottawa Dance Directive, NAC Dance, Canada Dance Festival, University of Ottawa Theatre Department, VOX Théâtre, Propeller Dance, Aroha Fine Arts, the Ottawa International Salsa Convention, Sinha Danse (Montreal), MASC, FESFO, the National Centre for Dance Therapy with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Lycée Claudel, and CEAO at De La Salle High School. 

As a performer and choreographer, he has been featured in Ottawa, Toronto, and internationally, including appearances at the HUM TV Awards and New Blue Emerging Dance Festival. A full-time dance educator and arts administrator, Geoffrey is also the founder of GD Dance Initiatives and currently studies Classical Indian Dance with Anjali Patil (Kathak, Ottawa) and with Rahul Acharya (Odissi, Bhubaneswar, India)

Diplômé du programme de danse contemporaine de The School of Dance, Geoffrey Dollar contribue activement à la communauté artistique d’Ottawa depuis 2016. Il a collaboré avec de nombreux organismes et artistes, dont le Centre de danse contemporaine (ODD), Danse CNA, Festival Danse Canada, l’Université d’Ottawa, VOX Théâtre, Propeller Dance, Aroha Fine Arts, la Convention internationale de salsa d’Ottawa, Sinha Danse, MASC, FESFO, le Centre national de danse thérapie des Grands Ballets Canadiens, Lycée Claudel et le CEAO à l’École Secondaire Publique De La Salle. 

Comme interprète et chorégraphe, il a présenté son travail à Ottawa, Toronto et à l’international, notamment au HUM TV Awards et au New Blue Emerging Dance Festival. En plus d’agir à titre d’éducateur et administrateur, il est fondateur de GD Dance Initiatives et poursuit sa formation en danse classique indienne avec Anjali Patil (Kathak, Ottawa), et avec Rahul Acharya (Odissi, Bhubaneswar, Inde)

Nishita Alex is a professionally trained Indian classical dancer with over 25 years of stage experience. She began dancing at the age of three under Guru Kalamandalam Vinodini of Natyadarpana in Calicut, Kerala, where she studied Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kuchipudi. In 2001, she earned the prestigious title of State Kalathilakam from the Government of Kerala. 

In her late teens, Nishita pursued advanced Mohiniyattam training under Padma Shri Bharati Shivaji with the Center for Mohiniyattam. She has since performed at major festivals in India, including Chennai’s Music Academy, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, and Natyanjali. Her international career includes representing India in Southeast Asia and performing at renowned venues such as the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and in St. Petersburg, Russia. 

Having moved to Canada in 2022, Nishita is now based in Ottawa, where she is dedicated to promoting Mohiniyattam and sharing its grace with new audiences.

Nishita Alex est une danseuse de formation professionnelle en danse classique indienne, forte de plus de 25 ans d’expérience sur scène. Elle a commencé la danse à l’âge de trois ans auprès de son maître, Kalamandalam Vinodini, de Natyadarpana à Calicut, au Kerala, où elle a étudié le Bharatanatyam, le Mohiniyattam et le Kuchipudi. En 2001, elle a obtenu le prestigieux titre de State Kalathilakam décerné par le gouvernement du Kerala. 

À la fin de son adolescence, Nishita a poursuivi une formation avancée en Mohiniyattam auprès de Padma Shri Bharati Shivaji au sein du Center for Mohiniyattam. Installée au Canada depuis 2022, Nishita vit aujourd’hui à Ottawa, où elle se consacre à la promotion du Mohiniyattam et au partage de sa grâce avec de nouveaux publics.

Artistic Director of Sadhana School of Indian Arts

Aishwarya Vijaykumar is a Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher and the Artistic Director of Sadhana School of Indian Arts in Ottawa. She trained under the Padmabhushan Dhananjayans, at Kalakshetra, and with Smt. Deepti Parol. She has performed in India, the Middle East, and across Canada. In addition to her dance work, Aishwarya is a Carnatic music singer with over 20 years of rigorous training. She also holds an MBA from Letroube University in Australia. Her multi-disciplinary artistry continues to enrich the Indian arts scene in Ottawa and beyond.

Artistic Director of Nrityashala Dance Company

Indrani Choudhury, originally from Kolkata, India, began her dance journey at age 7. Trained in Kathak under the Lucknow gharana, she holds the Sangeet Prabhakar certificate from Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Over the past 30 years, she has performed and choreographed numerous dance productions, including “Chandalika,” “Chitrangada,” and “Horikhela,” and has taught dance at various institutions. In 2016, she founded Nrityashala Dance School in Ottawa, offering training in Kathak, Manipuri, and Indian folk dances to students aged 6 to 60. Her mission is to promote the rich cultural and literary heritage of India through dance, believing it plays a vital role in physical and spiritual well-being. Indrani has also worked with seniors, fostering meaningful connections through dance. She has been a featured artist at ArohaFest, contributing to the celebration of Indian arts and culture in Canada.

Shreshta School of Dance was founded by Leenu V. Thampy in Chennai in 2018 and expanded to Ottawa, Canada, in 2022. Dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Bharatanatyam and other classical Indian dance forms, Shreshta nurtures beginners and seasoned dancers alike, fostering creativity while emphasizing traditional values and building a vibrant community of classical dance enthusiasts. 

Leenu V. Thampy is a multifaceted performer, teacher, and choreographer, trained in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and Kerala Nadanam under eminent gurus including Natyavisharada Anupama Mohan, Kalamandalam Sumathi, Kalakshetra Shaly Vijayan, RLV Unnikrishnan, and Padma Shri Shobhana Chandrakumar. Beginning her journey at age three, she completed her arangetram by seven and earned the prestigious Kalathilakam title on numerous occasions from 1998–2006 in Kerala. With over 200 performances worldwide, she brings her expertise in dance, Carnatic music, and veena playing to inspire students, ensuring the preservation and excellence of classical Indian dance at Shreshta.

L’école de danse Shreshta a été fondée par Leenu V. Thampy à Chennai en 2018 et s’est étendue à Ottawa, Canada, en 2022. Dédiée à la préservation et à la promotion du riche héritage du Bharatanatyam et des autres danses classiques indiennes, Shreshta accueille débutants et danseurs expérimentés, encourage la créativité tout en valorisant les traditions et en cultivant une communauté dynamique d’amateurs de danse classique. 

Leenu V. Thampy est une artiste, enseignante et chorégraphe polyvalente, formée au Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi et Kerala Nadanam auprès de maîtres renommés tels que Natyavisharada Anupama Mohan, Kalamandalam Sumathi, Kalakshetra Shaly Vijayan, RLV Unnikrishnan et Padma Shri Shobhana Chandrakumar. Ayant présenté plus de 200 spectacles à l’échelle internationale, elle transmet sa maîtrise de la danse, de la musique carnatique et du veena pour inspirer ses élèves et assurer l’excellence et la transmission des danses classiques indiennes à Shreshta.

Priya Raj was first introduced to the South-East Indian Classical Dance form of Kuchipudi under the guidance of Sri Someswara Illuri Prasad Garu. The completion of her Rangapravesham paved the way for diverse classical, semi-classical, folk, and Bollywood performance opportunities in her youth. Following her studies in Electronics and Communication Engineering with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, India, and her professional development as a Software Engineer in Canada, she began her exploration of Kathak Classical Indian Dance under the tutelage of Guru Anjali Patil Ji. She looks forward to fusing her past cultural experiences with a renewed dedication to excellence.

C’est par l’entremise de la danse classique indienne du Kuchipudi que Priya Raj débute son parcours en danse sous la direction du Gourou Someswara Illuri Prasad. Ayant atteint son Rangapravesham à l’adolescence, de nombreuses occasions de prestations classiques, semi-classiques, folkloriques, et Bollywood lui ont été présentées. Suite à ses études en ingénierie électronique et en communication avec l’Université technologique de Jawaharlal Nehru à Hyderabad en Inde, suivit de son développement professionnel en tant que Développeuse de logiciel au Canada, elle renoue sa passion pour la danse avec une formation ardue en danse Kathak sous la tutelle de Gouroue Anjali Patil Ji. Se languissant de fusionner ses expériences culturelles antérieures avec sa quête pour l’excellence, elle se dévoue continuellement à son épanouissement artistique.

Sharmin Siddique is an Engineer by profession and a lifelong student of the South Asian classical arts. From an early age, she studied Bengali folk music and Rabindra Sangeet, going on to participate in music competitions in Bangladesh while pursuing her degree in architecture. She has been training in the Indian Classical Dance form of Kathak with Guru Anjali Patil ji and has participated in several performances organized by Aroha Fine Arts and ArohaFest such as ArohaFest Diwali Celebration (2022) at the National Arts Centre, and ArohaFest Nritya Mahotsav (2023) at the Shenkman Arts Centre, in Ottawa.

Ingénieur de profession, Sharmin Siddique a toujours étudié les Arts classiques de l’Asie du Sud. Dès son plus jeune âge, elle a étudié la musique folklorique bengalie et le Rabindra Sangeet, puis a participé à des concours de musique au Bangladesh tout en poursuivant ses études d’architecture. Parallèlement, elle s’entraîne en danse classique indienne du Kathak sous la tutelle de la Gouroue Anjali Patil ji et a participé à de nombreux spectacles et évènements organisés par Aroha Fine Arts et ArohaFest, tels qu’ArohaFest Célébration Diwali (2022) au Centre national des Arts, et ArohaFest Nritya Mahotsav (2023) au Centre des arts Shenkman, à Ottawa.

Sanvi Purohit is an emerging dance artist based in Ottawa who has been training in Kathak Classical Indian Dance under the tutelage of Guru Anjali Patil Ji. She has performed repertoire and her own original works for community events and festivals, weddings, as well as formal productions organized by ArohaFest and Aroha Fine Arts at the Shenkman Arts Centre and the National Arts Centre. Combining her Kathak artistry with her black belt in jiujitsu, she is a dynamic and graceful performer who is eager to grow as a dance professional.

Sanvi Purohit est une danseuse émergente qui s’entraîne à la danse classique indienne du Kathak auprès de la Gouroue de renom, Anjali Patil Ji. Ayant eu l’occasion de se produire dans le cadre d’événements communautaires, et de prestations formelles organisées par ArohaFest et Aroha Fine Arts au Centre des Arts Shenkman ainsi qu’au Centre national des Arts. Mettant sur scène son artistique ainsi que le dynamisme en provencance de son entrainement en jiujistu (ceinture noire), elle se languit d’évoluer davantage à titre d’artiste professionnelle de la danse.

Yug Patel has been naturally drawn to Garba since the age of five, long before formal training shaped his artistry. His journey advanced under Gujarat Technological University (GTU), where he represented the university at Zonal, West Zonal, and National Folk Dance competitions. Guided by Harfik Trivedi (mentor), Utsav Shah (teacher & choreographer), and Priyank Bhikadiya (senior), he developed expertise in Hudo, Mishra Raas, and built a strong foundation in Gujarati folk dances. Expanding beyond competition, Yug embraced Prachin Garbo, Kutchi, and other regional Gujarati folk forms, carrying forward both authenticity and festive spirit. Alongside performing, he has four years of experience as an assistant dance instructor, nurturing new talent and ensuring folk traditions remain vibrant within his community.

Bhangrascape, a Bhangra group from Ottawa, was launched with the vision and purpose of making Bhangra accessible to everyone in Ottawa and beyond. Through Bhangra, a very energetic and celebratory folk dance originating from the land of Punjab in India, the founders are dedicated to ensuring that this vibrant legacy continues and provides opportunities for local communities to remain connected with this element of the culture of India in Canada.

C’est par l’entremise du Bhangra, une forme de danse folklorique festive et énergétique en provenence de la région du Punjab en Inde, que les fondatrices espèrent partager et préserver cet élément de la culture Indienne au Canada.

“Swarbandh” is a collective of passionate artists dedicated to celebrating the richness and diversity of Marathi culture through music, dance, and storytelling. They proudly present a vibrant performance that honors tradition while creating connections across generations and borders. 

The group features musicians trained in the classical traditions of India, including: Poonam Samarth and Akash Hedau, both graduates of the prestigious Akhil Bharatiya Gandharv Sangeet Mahavidyalaya; Virendra Dhavale and Soniya Sontakke, who share a love for Marathi music, from Ghazals to Abhangas; as well as Sheetal Patki and Pawan Patki, with their magnificent skills in Marathi music who bring additional depth through song and literary descriptions. This event is supported on Rhythm by passionate Rhythmist Akhil Edirisinghe, a third-generation tabla player of the Punjab Gharana. Together, these musicians will offer a vibrant soundscape that carries the soul of Maharashtra. 

“Swarbandh” also interweaves Maharashtra’s intricate tapestry of dance by showcasing: Neha Junagade and her ensemble of women presenting “Gondhal” a devotional folk dance-drama performed in traditional nauvari sarees, which is an offering that blends rhythm, gesture, and storytelling; Gurudatta (Guru) Joshi, a lifelong devotee of folk traditions, brings Bharud, a form deeply rooted in devotional music and philosophy; and The Joshi Trio (Ananya, Nivedita, and Nehali) carry forward the elegance of Lawni, one of the most popular folk dances of Maharashtra, showcasing youthful energy and classical precision. 

Beyond their artistry, members of “Swarbandh” are deeply engaged in community-building, from choreographing children’s performances to teaching Marathi language and music, organizing cultural programs, and volunteering at schools. Together, they embody a living bridge between their Maharashtrian heritage and their Canadian lives.

Swarbandh est un collectif d’artistes passionnés dédié à la célébration de la richesse et la diversité de la culture marathi à travers la musique, la danse et le conte. Le groupe propose des prestations vibrantes qui rendent hommage à la tradition tout en créant des liens au-delà des générations et des frontières.

Rashmi Rekha Gupta is an Ottawa-based artist originally from India. She has been passionate about painting since childhood, even while studying Physics, Information Technology, Business Administration, and Film Production. Her practice covers a wide range of techniques, including watercolour, oil, acrylic, batik, and mixed media, and she works on surfaces such as canvas, wood, and fabric. Rashmi’s paintings have been exhibited in Ottawa at CISTEL Corporation and the Midway Family Fun Park, and are part of private collections across Canada and the United States. Fifteen of her works are displayed at ProSoya Inc.’s office and atrium in Ottawa. She is an active member of Arts Network Ottawa, ArtEast, and Art Lending Ottawa, and serves as an Artistic Mentor at Studio 507. In 2006, she received an award from the Prime Minister of Canada for her artistic contribution. Her work has also been presented during numerous editions ArohaFest, highlighting her vibrant and masterful use of colour and form.

Rashmi Rekha Gupta est une artiste visuelle établie à Ottawa et originaire de l’Inde. Sa passion pour la peinture remonte à l’enfance, parallèlement à des études en physique, technologie de l’information, administration des affaires et production cinématographique. Elle explore de nombreuses techniques : aquarelle, huile, acrylique, batik et médiums mixtes et travaille avec de multiples matériaux tels que la toile, le bois et le tissu. Ses œuvres ont été exposées à Ottawa, notamment chez CISTEL Corporation et au Midway Family Fun Park, et se retrouvent dans des collections privées au Canada et aux États-Unis. Quinze de ses tableaux sont présentés dans les bureaux et l’atrium de ProSoya Inc. à Ottawa. Elle est membre active d’Arts Network Ottawa, d’ArtEast et d’Art Lending Ottawa, et agit comme mentore artistique au Studio 507. En 2006, elle a reçu un prix du Premier ministre du Canada pour sa contribution artistique. Ses œuvres ont été présentées à ArohaFest à de nombreuses reprises, où elles révèlent sa créativité et son sens de la couleur.

Sanjay Sundram was born in New Delhi, India. He trained as an architect at SPA, Delhi and then studied visual communication at I.I.T.- Bombay. He has worked as a professional artist since 2008 and has exhibited at Art fairs and shows in India, Italy, U.K., U.S.A and Canada. 

Strong environmental themes flow through Sanjay’s acrylic and watercolour paintings. His work has been collected by the United Nations Development Fund, the Worldwide Fund for Nature, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, City of Ottawa, and the Fortis Foundation among others. He has received multiple Art Creation awards from Ontario and the City of Ottawa. 

In 2022-23, Sanjay founded the Teach Your Parents climate initiative that educates children in Canada and India through his Art, comics and workshops. This work has been widely covered on national media through CBC, Globe & Mail, RogersTV, etc. and featured in the Canadian Journal for Children’s Rights at Carleton University.

Il a reçu plusieurs prix de création artistique de la province de l’Ontario et de la Ville d’Ottawa. 

En 2022-2023, Sanjay a fondé l’initiative Teach Your Parents, un projet sur le climat qui sensibilise les enfants au Canada et en Inde grâce à son art, ses bandes dessinées et ses ateliers. Ce travail a fait l’objet d’une large couverture médiatique nationale (CBC, Globe and Mail, Rogers TV, etc.) et a été présenté dans le Canadian Journal for Children’s Rights de l’Université Carleton.

Suman studied Fine Arts at the Delhi College of Arts, one of the most prestigious art institutes in India. She was a founding member of the ‘Group 8’ collective of artists in India. Her paintings have been exhibited at various public and private galleries in the country, as well as in Art Fairs. 

Her works are in prestigious collections including the Delhi Governor’s, the National Gallery of Arts and numerous private collections. She received national recognition through the All India Fine Arts and Crafts (AIFACS) award for her work in printmaking. Suman has undertaken commissioned works for the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations Development Fund among others. 

She has lived in Ottawa since 2018 and has exhibited her works at juried shows at Shenkman Arts Centre, at the Ottawa City Hall, and numerous other venues in and around Ottawa. She received Ottawa’s Art Creation awards in 2022 and 2024.

Montreal-born Johanne Richer is a visual artist who is deeply involved in her community. She has accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge in various areas, including training in painting, dance, and music, which serves as a guide in the creation of her works. As a figurative painter, she uses oil as her medium. Her knowledge of movement forms a dynamic backdrop, and consistently shapes her creations. She intertwines creativity, spontaneity, freedom, and restraint to draw out all the subtleties associated with dance. Johanne exhibits frequently in Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick. She has more than 100 exhibitions to her credit. She was co-presenter of the visual arts component of the ArohaFest Spring and Diwali Editions, co-presented by the National Arts Centre, Aroha Fine Arts, and the Shenkman Arts Centre.

Elle entrecroise créativité, spontanéité, liberté et retenue, afin d’en retirer toutes les subtilités liées à la danse. Johanne expose fréquemment au Québec, en Ontario et au Nouveau-Brunswick. Elle a à son actif plus de 100 expositions. Elle fut co-présentatrice du volet d’arts visuels lors du Festival ArohaFest – Édition printemps, et Édition Diwali. événements co-présentés par le Centre National des arts et Aroha Fine Arts et le Centre des Arts Shenkman.

As a child, Lily explored brush-work techniques, drawing from her mother’s approach to visual arts. She later developed her skills as a performing artist, animator, and competitive swimmer. These experiences informed her practice and understanding of movement. She now works with different mediums, viewing painting as a space where infinite possibilities exist. In 2018, she began her professional artistic development; enrolling in the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Visual Arts and Media program at UQAM. With new techniques and mediums she discovered pathways of creativity and collaboration. These pathways allow her to accurately incorporate her interests as well as subject matter which is political or intimate, inspired by social movements, fond memories, or performing artists. Enshrined in her work are the recurring themes of the feminine condition, water, and flowers. Her play on light, obscurity, back-lit scenes, and shadows allows her to transmit a unique form of realism which can be found within each of her pieces.

Lily Lachapelle est une artiste visuelle native de Montréal. Dès son enfance, elle intègre plusieurs techniques au pinceau et une approche des arts visuels que lui transmet sa mère avec beaucoup de passion. Au fil des ans, elle se développe à travers les arts de la scène, de l’animation, et pratique la natation de compétition, ce qui aura une influence importante sur sa vision du mouvement. C’est grâce à l’exploration de divers médiums qu’elle constate que la peinture représente un espace infini de possibilité. Ce n’est qu’en 2018 qu’elle mène sa démarche artistique au Baccalauréat en Arts visuels et médiatiques de l’UQAM. L’apprentissage de nouvelles techniques et l’exploration de nouveaux outils lui ouvrent la voie de la création et de la collaboration. Elle explore de nouveaux médiums et définit ses champs d’intérêt en abordant des sujets à la fois politiques et intimes, notamment inspirée par les mouvements sociaux, la mémoire de ses proches et les Arts de la scène. La condition féminine, l’eau et les fleurs sont des thèmes récurrents qu’elle cherche à enchâsser dans ses œuvres. Elle joue sur la lumière, le clair-obscur, le contre-jour et les ombres portées qui lui permet de transposer un effet réaliste dans chacunes de ses œuvres.

Raghav has worked in the food processing technology, food safety, and cannabis processing & quality assurance fields. His career highlights his passion for agricultural and culinary exploration, rooted in science and public safety. Aside from his academic and professional pursuits, Raghav enjoys volunteering for social, cultural, environmental, and immigration-related causes. Travel and cultural exploration have played a significant role in his personal growth by nourishing his desire to understand diverse cultures and their languages.
